"The Residents Freak Show" (Voyager 1993)

The Residents conquered this medium of interactive CD ROM on their first attempt. The Freak Show began life as an album in 1991 and was adopted into a graphic novel by Dark Horse Publishing the following year. Two years in the making the CD ROM is the result of a collaboration with computer artist and animator Jim Ludtke. In the Freak Show, Tex the Barker (a failed lion tamer) introduces us to characters like Herman the Human Mole, Benny the Bump, Mickey the Mumbling Midget, Harry the Head, Wanda the Worm Woman and Jelly Jack the Boneless Boy. We see all the freaks perform (including The Residents themselves) but the real story lies behind the stage as our voyeurism leads us into snooping around the performers caravans to discover their sad and often tragic stories.
